Why lactate is more accurate than heart rate

Heart rate lies. With dehydration, sleep deprivation, stress or heat — your HR zones drift. You think you're in Zone 2, but you're already in Zone 3.

Lactate shows the real picture: which energy system you're using right now and how long you can sustain this pace.

LT1 — first threshold

Below it you burn predominantly fat and can work for hours.

LT2 — second threshold (MLSS)

Above it lactate accumulates and you will inevitably slow down. This is the threshold at which you can sustain marathon or Ironman 70.3 pace.
